What is an eBook?

An eBook is a book in digital format. It contains the same story and, usually, the same images as a printed book. Your eBook can be purchased and downloaded from the Middle-earth Network Store and is then immediately available to read on your computer, eReader, mobile device or tablet.

What is an eReader?

An eReader is a portable reading device for your eBooks. You can download, store and read the digital format of all of your favourite books. There are many eReaders available, including Kobo Touch and Vox, Sony Reader, Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble NOOK, among many others. Most tablets also offer an eReader application so that you can enjoy your books on them.

How are our eBooks formatted?

Our eBooks are supplied in the EPUB format. EPUB is an open eBook standard – the most popular in the world – which can be read on most computers, eReaders,  and mobile devices. Because of certain formatting issues, for our heavily illustrated books, we offer a standard EPUB file and an EPUB file created specifically for iPad.

How big is an EPUB file?

EPUB file sizes vary depending on their content. The average text-only EPUB file is between 1 and 2 MB, but some of our eBooks are much larger as they contain many illustrations.

Adobe Digital Editions (free) or a similar eReading program is necessary to open and display the EPUB format on your computer. EPUB files cannot be opened in a web browser, in Adobe Acrobat or in Microsoft Word. ADE will also store and create a library for your eBooks, making it easy for you to acces and enjoy them. There is also a function to transfer eBooks to your eReader or mobile device.

Can I test a sample before I purchase an eBook?

Yes, you definitely can! We offer a sample chapter of each eBook that you can download to your computer where you will be able to check that the EPUB file displays properly. If there is an iPad version available, you will be able to test the chapter on your iPad to verify that you are buying the version you want.
